Survival has sped up our ability to invent, such as the Inuit’s invention of the kayak in order to look for, hunt and harvest enough food to feed large families. Today, kayaking has grown from a survival method to a recreational pastime. No longer must we hunt for food as our ancestors did. If you’ve ever run whitewater rapids, then you know the feeling of the literal rush. White water kayaking uses the same sort of measurements (a class system) to gauge the level of difficulty on the water. Whitewater kayaking, then, uses a gradient scale of Class II to Class VI. There is no Class I because this type of water is not really white water at all. The Class II represents some churning water, rock obstacles and some maneuvering over certain obstructions. Class VI can be considered deadly, if not impossible. Most family and fun trips run white water trips at Class III or Class IV. This class of river includes sections of the Colorado, the Columbia, the Rio Grande and the Snake River, for instance.
