Where can I get a map of the different currents of lakes/rivers in the United States?

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010
Me asked:

I’m looking for some kind of chart map that will show me the features and currents of a given lake in the United States. I want to be able to plan some trips knowing about the currents and the specific geography of the river/lake for kayaking. Does anyone know if I can get these somewhere online or in a store? Thanks.

Is it normal to have water come through the holes in a kayak?

Monday, September 28th, 2009
jamprl asked:

My dad and I are having an argument over the small amount of water that comes into my kayak through the small holes in the boat. I say the holes are part of the design, to better balance/ballast the boat when you’re in the water, he says it’s not natural and there’s probably a leak somewhere.

What types of boat are, or were built out of fabric stretched over a skeleton structure?

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009
Tahini Raving Weirdo asked:

I just saw BMW’s concept car “Gina” today, a car whose body panels are made entirely out of fabric, like an umbrella.
What an amazing idea that is, and I am beginning to think that this would be one sweet way to build boats, too.
And I am sure someone must have done this before – I darkly remember Eskimo kayaks being built from whale bones and seal skin, if I remember correctly, isn’t that right?
What other types of boat were built from fabric draped over a skeletal support structure, do you know of any?

How can I carry my kayak on top of my car?

Monday, September 14th, 2009
tinketew asked:

I just got a new car so I have to find a new way to carry my kayak. I don’t have a roof rack. I would like to consider getting the J type carriers but I think they have to be attached to a roof rack. Is my only option to use the grey foam pieces and strap it down? I was hoping to get another kayak down the road and be able transport both of them together on top of my car.

What size of outboard motor do I need for a sea kayak?

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009
Tahini Raving Weirdo asked:

I know this sounds like I’m losing my marbles, but I really do plan to attach an outboard motor to a sea kayak.
The plan is to use it to commute across Otago Harbour in southern New Zealand on a daily basis, 8 miles each way.
I’ll be using a wetsuit, and I’ll be carrying emergency paddles and a mobile phone, so not to worry.
But I need to find a motor of the right size – I know 150cc inboard jets get kayaks up to 25mph. I’d be happy with half that.
Who makes outboards with, say, 2HP?
As all answers here are very useful, I am putting the question to vote.
Thank you, everybody.

Where should i launch my kayak in chicago?

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009
willsmithrocks500 asked:

i’m planning on kayaking from from chicago to michigan, but i’m not sure where to launch it from. also, if you know of a safer place let me know because i’d rather not risk getting run over by a boat. and if it had to be somewhere other than chicago, i’d rather it be north of chicago, because i’m heading east by north-east, so i’d rather not make it further.
well DUH i’m going to launch it in lake michigan. give me something more specific and a little more intelligent than that.
